Most parents
embark on the search for quality childcare. We look for the most
talented teachers, the cleanest facilities, the most efficient management,
and the most creative and enriching curriculums.
But, imagine
how much more difficult your search would become if your child had
special needs? Who would care for your child? Where would you turn
for the specialized care your child requires?
Sadly,
I regularly encounter parents, who have struggled for years to find
care for their special needs child. They place their child at traditional
day care centers, and inevitably, are asked to withdraw them from
the program. Most traditional day care centers are simply not staffed
to care for children with disabilities.
And that
is where the Villa's Youth and Family Support Services is filling
a need in our community. By offering weekend, after school and summer
programs for children with developmental and emotional disabilities,
the Villa is answering a call from hundreds of families searching
for therapeutic care for their children.
Since 1979,
we've provided these specialized services to parents in Richmond
City and Henrico County. This fall, we're excited to be extending
our after school programs for children with Attention Deficit and
related disorders to south Richmond through the Villa's new partnership
with Southampton Baptist Church. Our expansion allows us to bring
our services to families who otherwise couldn't access our campus
because of distance. For many parents with special needs children,
it will end their search for quality childcare, reducing the many
challenges they face.
