The Richmond
SPCA Humane Education Program is designed to teach our community’s
children compassion toward all living things and to nurture the
bond shared between people and their beloved pets.
Animal Tales
Join us at the Robins-Starr Humane Center for story time about a
special animal. Story time is for children of preschool age, and
can be arranged according to a visiting group’s schedule. Mommy
groups and preschools are always welcome. One of our own pets or
Wags the Puppet will make a special visit to the kids. Every child
will go home with a balloon, a sticker and a fun, safe pet-related
experience. A $1 donation per child to support the pets at the Richmond
SPCA is appreciated.
Paws to R.E.A.D.®
Volunteers with Sprite's HERO and the Paws to R.E.A.D.® program
visit the Robins-Starr Humane Center once a month for kids to read
to their dogs. These dogs are registered and insured therapy dogs
who all love a good book. Sessions are held the second Saturday
of each month from 11 a.m. to noon. All ages of readers are welcome.
Call to sign up for a 15-minute session. Bring a favorite title
or choose from the wide selection of books in the Richmond SPCA
children's room. These dogs even like books about cats!
Animal Brigade
Children ages 11 to 15 who have demonstrated a strong commitment
to animals, are invited to apply for membership to the Animal Brigade.
We meet on the first and third Tuesdays and Thursdays of each month
from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children will explore various topics related
to animal care and welfare and will develop and implement their
own projects to help animals. An application is required to participate
in Animal Brigade.
Birthday Parties
Voted one of the top three locations for birthday parties by Style
Weekly readers, the Richmond SPCA hosts hundreds of parties each
year in our Exploratorium. Don’t miss your opportunity to celebrate
your child’s birthday at the Robins-Starr Humane Center! We promise
lots of doggone good fun, so schedule your party today. Parties
include crafts, games, time spent with puppies and kittens, and
much, much more! Parties must be scheduled at least six weeks in
advance.
Critter Camp
Each year the Richmond SPCA attracts eager children to its annual
critter camp. Critter campers will enjoy an exciting and educational
one-week camp that emphasizes the bond shared between people and
companion animals and lessons of proper pet care. Planned activities
include games, skits, pet training, tours and crafts. The Richmond
SPCA Critter Camp is held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through
Friday during the months of June, July and August and costs $135.
Registration is open to children ages 6 to 10 years on a first-come
basis.
Tours and Visits
The Richmond SPCA schedules outbound tours and inbound visits that
teach lessons of responsible pet ownership. Humane education staff
members are available for classroom visits, or a field trip can
be arranged for your class or group to visit the Robins-Starr Humane
Center. Visits and tours can be arranged for school classes, scout
troops and other after-school groups. A variety of age-appropriate
presentation topics are available and may be accompanied by a child-friendly
pet from the shelter or an animal puppet.
