"I have been a
public school teacher for ten years, until recently when I decided
to stay at home to care for my two year old daughter and to finish
my doctorate in Reading Education from the University of Virginia.
I am certified in K-8
as well as endorsed as a reading specialist. My concentration has
been on early literacy (Pre-K through 3rd grade), however I was
a reading specialist in middle school for one year. I have a masters
degree in Early Childhood Education and hope to finish my PhD in
Reading Education this spring.
Part of my training
while at UVA has been in diagnosing and remediating reading difficulties
at the McGuffey Reading Center. In addition, I was a coordinator
of a volunteer tutoring program for an entire school whereby I planned
for and supervised fifteen tutors who tutored first and second graders
twice a week. I am also trained in Reading Recovery, which is an
intensive, one-to-one intervention for first graders who struggle
with learning to read.
I have extensive knowledge
and experience with teaching reading, as well as access to wonderful
resources including thousands of childrens books, decodable and
predictable texts, as well as many hands-on activities to make learning
to read engaging and fun.
I have a passion for
reading and childrens literature. I believe that all children can
learn to read. The key is in accurately assessing childrens strengths
and weaknesses in order to meet their individual needs and to take
them as far as they can go.
I would prefer to work
with students K 5, but would consider other students that do not
fall into this range as well, if my schedule permits.
Thanks for considering
me in your quest to help your child learn to read!"
